The SmartWheels Tag is designed for occasional check-ins, not continuous real-time monitoring — so a short delay between updates is expected behavior, not a fault with your device.
Continuous, real-time tracking uses a lot of power. To keep the Tag small, battery-powered, and long-lasting (months at a time without a charge), it reports location periodically rather than constantly. The default is every 10 minutes, giving roughly 4–6 months of battery life — you can also switch to hourly reporting for up to a year of battery life, if you'd rather have longer battery life than more frequent updates.
The Tag relies on nearby phones passing by to securely relay its location to your cloud app — similar to how crowd-sourced "find my device" networks work. When a compatible phone comes within range, the Tag briefly connects to it, and that phone relays the Tag's location back to SmartWheels.
This also explains why coverage isn't uniform everywhere. If your vehicle or asset is in a remote area, or somewhere with very few people carrying phones nearby, the Tag will only update when it happens to cross paths with a compatible device — which can mean longer gaps between updates than the usual 10-minute or 1-hour interval, simply because there's no nearby phone to relay the signal.
Even without real-time updates, the Tag is genuinely useful for knowing where a vehicle is and where it's been:
